phenotypes |
In this series, I'm interested in the cultural and the biological signifiers that mark people as blood relatives, in this case, mother and daughter. Webster's dictionary defines phenotype as "the visible properties of an organism that are produced by the interaction of the genotype and the environment." This interaction is often underplayed in the current hype about engineering genetic information. In the case of human inheritance it is especially difficult to tease out the relative influences of gene and environment. With photography, a medium of appearances, I am quite simply observing this very mysterious interaction. |
